The long-running studio behind hits like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is no more. Electronic Arts is shuttering BioWare, in a report confirmed by Bloomberg today.

Around 400 jobs are also expected to be cut, which makes up about 3% of the company's total work force and includes 50 staffers from BioWare. BioWare themselves confirmed the news through their own official channels, stating,

"BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending. There's nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition."

In a letter confirmed further by Bloomberg, EA's COO David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber told staff that they've taken a hard look at their business over the last few months, which is why several projects including the new Mass Effect have gone to the chopping block.

EA will continue to puff up its sports games, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and projects like the new Star Wars Jedi sequel and Iron Man game.

BioWare has been around since 1995 and then later acquired by EA in 2007. Their most recent game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, didn't quite meet expectations, so there was undoubtedly a lot of pressure on the studio. EA themselves underwent a massive shakeup in August when the company went private to the tune of $55 billion lead by Saudi Arabia's investment fund.
