PlayStation Exclusive Will Disappear Forever September 17

Currently, one of the biggest controversies in the gaming world surrounds the elimination of physical media, and the lack of actual ownership of games that comes with that. However, with many games in recent times having been designed to only be playable online, this is actually an issue that's existed for quite a while, as once these games' online features stop being supported, they're rendered completely unplayable.

Later this month, a PlayStation game from 2023 will be the latest title to fall victim to this trend. Firewall Ultra has never been the most popular game in the world, but it's still a shame that, on September 17, the VR FPS title will disappear forever.

PlayStation FPS Game Becomes Completely Unplayable on September 17

Firewall Ultra, the follow-up to the PlayStation VR's Firewall Zero Hour, released for the PlayStation VR 2 in 2023. Over the last three years, the online-only game has received its fair share of criticisms, due to its various bugs, poorly designed UI, and bizarre general design decisions.

Despite all of this, Firewall Ultra has stayed up for three years for a reason. It may not sound like a lot, but when compared to something like the disaster that was Concord, it's quite a long time, and proof that the game does have fans who enjoy it, warts and all.

Sadly for its fans, an addendum was recently added to the PlayStation blog on an article from 2023. It reads "Online features for Firewall Ultra will be terminated and will no longer be available on September 17, 2026. As you must be online to play this title, this game will no longer be playable starting September 17, 2026 at 10:00am PDT."

While this is unfortunate news, it's hardly a shocker. Just four months after Firewall Ultra first release, developer First Contact Entertainment announced that the studio would be closing down at the end of 2023. First Contact Entertainment described the reasoning for this as being "The lack of support for VR within the industry has eventually taken its toll. As a AAA VR game developer, we are just not able to justify the expense needed going forward."

Firewall Ultra is now no longer purchasable on the PlayStation store. At least for the next few days, it is listed as "Announced" in the space where the game's price, ratings and reviews would normally be. However, Firewall Zero Hour is still available for purchase, as is another First Contat Entertainment title.

Solaris: Offworld Combat released for the Meta Quest, Oculus Rift, and original PlayStation VR in 2020. And while the FPS title has been delisted on the Meta Horizon store, it is still available to purchase on the PlayStation store.
