BioWare shuts down: No more Mass Effect
On Oct. 21, BioWare revealed that it’s shutting down after more than 30 years of being a studio. BioWare also announced the end of the next Mass Effect project.
“Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the studio stated. “There is nothing easy about writing these words.”
The announcement then shared that BioWare is currently focusing on supporting their team through this transition.
EA shuts down BioWare
According to a letter shared with Electronic Arts’ employees, the company is closing its BioWare studio and the Edmonton workspace. This decision follows Electronic Arts’ move to focus its resources on bigger projects with more growth potential.
The letter also stated that Electronic Arts wants to build on the success of Battlefield 6, continue investing in Apex Legends, and have Respawn and DICE work together on a future project. Other major focuses include Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
“As we focus on these larger opportunities, we’ve had a small team at BioWare working on early-development for Mass Effect,” the company stated. “We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace. BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly.”
Electronic Arts cuts 400 jobs
Electronic Arts is cutting about 400 jobs as well, which includes 50 BioWare ones, according to a Bloomberg report. The report also mentioned how the company went private in August 2026 following a $55 billion deal involving Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
